nevertheless that's way to win Grand Tours these days. I'm sure people would love if 5 different skybot would attack on the same stage but what's the purpose? Having that strong train doesn't really leave you with other options unless you don't wanna fuck up your own race.

Viktor86 [Le Tour de Brabant] Thursday 2.Aug 01:56, 2018
Another addition is the difference in the way both teams present themselves towards the media, fans and other outsiders.

Koronin [Koronin] Wednesday 1.Aug 22:18, 2018
Andy, that is exactly why Quickstep doesn't get the hate from fans even though they dominate the classics. They are entertaining to watch. With Quickstep you don't know how they are going to race any specific race, whereas with Sky you know exactly what they are going to do.

Andy [Luxembourg Finest] Wednesday 1.Aug 22:09, 2018

I saw Kwiato was mad on Twitter today, but he missed one point. Sky in GTs are predictable, while Quick Step in the classics is not. They make the races fun and attack, while Sky never do that until final climb and sometimes not then either. Only exception is if they are too far behind before last mountain stages and they need to attack early like Froome at Finestre.

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Wednesday 1.Aug 22:07, 2018

Booing and piss throwing hasn't worked.
When you see an attack, you know immediately that it's not gonna work. Sky always have enough strength to bring it back. In a group of 20 they have 6. In a group of 10 they have 4. In a group of 6 they have 3. Boring.

Assassin [Troy The Trader] Wednesday 1.Aug 21:47, 2018
It's their backup plan as there is no Ref to pay :D

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 1.Aug 21:45, 2018
Have all these suggestions from the French not got the same purpose? A. To prevent a Brit win. B. To try to enable the impossible, a French win.

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Wednesday 1.Aug 20:30, 2018
5th Winter Fantasy Overall
It would be nice if they managed to make it exciting again. The Tour de France theme song has been "Sky controls the peloton" (melody: Space Oddity) since 2012. His suggestions are to reduce team sizes, introduce a budget cap, and to ban power meters and radio communication.

It's about reducing down to 6 guys team even in GT's

Koronin [Koronin] Wednesday 1.Aug 08:36, 2018
Viktor, with all the contradictory comments Valverde has been making lately I don't think anyone has any clue what he's actually wanting or not wanting with GTs, esp the Vuelta, which he's talked about previously wanting the podium record that he's very close to for history and all that stuff, as history and those types of crazy records mean a lot to him. He keeps making all sorts of contradictory comments. He didn't used to do that, but this year he's been really bad for that.

Koronin [Koronin] Wednesday 1.Aug 08:33, 2018
Goon, you're right about it being bad luck vs a mistake with Nibali.

You can't say Nibali was a mistake Koronin . .. bad luck is the word you are looking for ... if you pick top 6 gc and 3 sprinters ( Sagan, Gaviria and Groenewegen as the obvious ones ) you win this thing also ... nothing new there...
I agree the gc was not that obvious pre race this time, so i can support EPO's choice of tactics :) ... well done :))

Viktor86 [Le Tour de Brabant] Sunday 29.Jul 06:54, 2018
Valverde apparently has stopped trying to go for a GC in GT's and goes for stage wins instead. Though I want to see the Vuelta for that first.

Koronin [Koronin] Sunday 29.Jul 02:25, 2018
My biggest mistake was having Nibali at my team captain. That didn't work at all. I also expected a lot more from Valverde as far as stages went. I expected he would have had a lot more high placing finishes along with a higher overall placing. Truthfully I have no clue what he was trying to do this Tour and he most definitely didn't have any kind of form at all. Although he said he was in race shape, I'm semi questioning that as well.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Saturday 28.Jul 18:57, 2018
I did pretty much the opposite. Went with six sprinters, one of whom was Cav unfortunately. On reflection there were so many sprints in round one, I should of made them captain, and vice captains too. I also lost two of the three GC guys early, Porte and Nibali, which hasn't helped.

sker [Team Paracarri] Saturday 28.Jul 18:47, 2018
The 4x GC points bonus is always really tempting, but if you loose a couple of GC riders you won't recover the points you loose in the stages.
Went with the classic 7+2 because I couldn't decide the GC riders to drop for the sprinters: lost Nibali (wich was my captain and I still think would have challenged at leats for a podium without that fall), lost Porte early and got Yates, Fulgsang and Quintana really under performing.

Basically since week 2 I have been trying desperatly to recover points here and there to earn a half leaderboard position at least

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Saturday 28.Jul 18:27, 2018
I realised something similar in last years Giro. Started without Tom Dumoulin. But ended up getting more points than the majority who had him, because most had him at 80%, and I brought him in at 125% for the second, and third rounds.

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Saturday 28.Jul 18:15, 2018
5th Winter Fantasy Overall
there was just nothing for the non-punchy climbers in the first week. and if i drag them along from the start at 80 % then i knew that could also bite me in the ass in weeks 2 and 3 when i want them higher.

example, geraint thomas at 80 %: 91,2 + 265,6 + 245,6 + 320 = 922.4
i had him at 0 %, 125 % and then 150 %: 415 + 460.5 = 875.5

so i've lost 46.9 pts geraint pts, but instead got 143.2 greipel pts (should have been 207.2, fuck the jury).
so it turns out it was actually better to start without the GC winner...

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Saturday 28.Jul 17:59, 2018
Your decision to go all in on the sprinters in the first round deserves to win for thinking out of the box. Would be good to see an unusual strategy take a GT as well. Best of luck.

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Saturday 28.Jul 17:48, 2018
5th Winter Fantasy Overall
i dont think so. i havent looked at all the teams, but Talentscout [Saxomientje] is 470 pts behind and will get like 450 more pts from GC than i will. and he has 2 healthy sprinters tomorrow while i only have 1. too bad about nibali..

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Saturday 28.Jul 17:32, 2018

I'm at Mid Ohio race track for the weekend (Indy Car race). Pulled up twitter while I was there to see what happened. Nice to see Roglic get the stage win. Was surprised to see Valverde lost so much time today, but he's been off this entire race. One note of interest, I wore my Valverde T-shirt to the track today and found a few other Indy Car fans are cycling fans. Also had a chance to meet driver Sebastian Bourdais briefly and he acknowledged my t-shirt, so he's a cycling fan. (He's also French).

Especially Tour I will say .... becaus let's face it ... The tour is the easiest GT climbing-vice ... 3 4 years ago I would say differently because the tour level was way higher than Giro and Vuelta, but that's not as much the case anymore ... now Giro got close to the same level as the tour, and Vuelta is maybe a little too climby for Roglic ...

Yeah ... agree... it's his versatility that makes him a winner candidate . .. if he climbs against a fresh Landa, Bernal, Porte or Froome on a mtf like Zoncolan or Tourmalet, i think he will have big problems . .. but thank God, a GT is more than that ... :D

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Friday 27.Jul 20:39, 2018

he got lost in the crosswinds a couple of times. but was lucky to not lose any time to it in the end. thats his weakness, positioning. other than that he is a complete rider. doesnt look much like a climber though, he is very "thick" compared to the bardets and the froomes he is climbing against

goon1221 [] Friday 27.Jul 20:32, 2018

Well Aragonite... I think we can say Roglic is a potential GT winner now ... and I rais it to credible.... when i was ruling him out a couple of mouths ago, I didn't really doubt his ability to stay strong for 3 weeks, but rather his ability against the canons in the long climbs ... some questions about that still, but I think we can say he is now definitely one to watch for a GT win in the future ... near future :))

That is not because of Katusha had a 3 man TTT first half of the stage, just because Fuglsang and Valverde wasn't good enough today. It is more because of the hard pace on Tourmalet and Gesink pace on Borderes, which I still not understand why he did. Would be better to go with Kruijswijk so he could have a gap if Roglic had got 15 sec on the rest. Nobody remember that he may become 5th anyway

So Froome will sit with Thomas nomatter what ? ... I really don't see it .... okey, if Thomas get problems a couple of km left on the last climb ... I can see it ... But what if Thomas gets the hammer on Tourmalet ... and Froome got good legs ?
I say Froome should go mid Tourmalet anyway and push what's left of Sunweb and LJ.... then it's not a mutiny, but a way to win TdF..... attack is the best defense....
With that being said, Froome didn't exactly promise well on the " turbo " stage ... But then again, he is more suitable to this long hard stage ...

sker [Team Paracarri] Thursday 26.Jul 19:20, 2018
Nah I don't think Froome would do anything not scripted by the team. Ony if Thomas is feeling super strong they might try to get rid of doumulin and Roglic and play it out between them.
Win this Tour doesn't change that much for Froome to put in jeopardy the relationship with Sky for the rest of his career.

Stat fact: if Sagan sprints at all in Paris he will break the point record for green jersey he already own

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Thursday 26.Jul 18:52, 2018

In the Giro he attacked Dumoulin, now he would be attacking a teammate and a friend. If Thomas has a bad day it could potentially put Dumoulin or Roglic in yellow with the two Skys in 3rd and 4th. It's a stupid gamble from the team's perspective. Bruyneel said he would've never allowed it, and Brailsford didn't either in 2012.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Thursday 26.Jul 18:36, 2018

I brought Sagan, Kristoff, and Degenkolb into my FC team. Was pissed last night when I heard the Demare tweet, for a couple of reasons. First, I left Demare out because of the possibility of him being timed out, and second, him being in the race lessened the chances of my riders today. However I have to be pleased Demare raced, and with my 128pts. Without FDJ riding for the win, the break would of been larger, would almost certainly have stayed away, and I would of scored close to zero points.

Lance was 100 % sure that stage 13 was a breakaway day. Then they only let a few guys escape and controlled it easily all day. I was wondering if there was something more to the handshake between Alaphilippe and Yates. Although then again back on stage 12 Alaphilippe and Valverde also had a brief exchange. I've been a fan of Alaphilippe's for awhile and this Tour he's really showing a lot. It's nice to see the respect he's earned as well.

Too bad about Dumoulin losing over a minute on stage 6 due to the puncture. Now he's no threat to Geraint unless he can somehow take a minute back before the TT.

So it is true. Wasn't sure. I agree with you completely, but that doesn't stop me thinking how cool, and outdated Alaphilippe's thought process was. #Never give a sucker an even break

Brian Holm avoided the potential disaster. He always gives the best interviews.

Problem is, they would get caught by the chasers behind. And all of a sudden Alaphilippe would be forced to cover all attacks just to make it a sprint finish. And then maybe Mollema wins while they look at eachother behind...

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 25.Jul 23:33, 2018
It was David Millar on ITV4 who came out with this. At the point in todays stage when Alaphilippe and Yates shook one anothers hand. If you get another chance to see yesterdays stage it does look like Alaphilippe is slowing down rapidly whilst looking behind for Yates.
I agree it would of been stupid, very cool but stupid. He would of been a strong favourite to win a sprint anyway. It was imo Yate's fear of Alaphilippe's great descending skills which caused the crash by making him ride faster than he was comfortable with.

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Wednesday 25.Jul 23:13, 2018
5th Winter Fantasy Overall
It would be stupid to wait for Yates... Yates gambled by trying to descend beyond his capabilities because he knew he couldn't win unless he arrived solo. Alaph was closing in quickly and looked like he would've won anyway. Either way, the best overall bike racer that day won the stage. The Norwegian commentators seemed to be of a different opinion the way they were talking about Yates being robbed of the stage win...

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 25.Jul 23:04, 2018
Watching a recording of today's stage. Didn't realise Alaphilippe was actually starting to wait up for Yates after his fall on the final downhill yesterday, until his DS intervined( would of loved to be able to listen to that conversation :)). Although it did look that way at the time, I didn't think that level of sportsmanship existed anymore. So not only does he look like a musketeer he behaves like one also. We need another couple of cool French riders to make up the trio, Demare need not apply :).
Julian fast becoming my favourite rider.

I know that's illegal, but it can't be a surprise with the way the UCI and Sky are handling the cases. The UCI is one shitty union without any guts and the only thing Sky is doing is complaining how they are the victims of everything, with Froome and Brailsford as worst of them.

Ten most famous cases of spitting in the football world according to The Telegraph. One player from the UK, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, and Paraguay. Then two from France, and two from ex French colonies. Maybe Brailsford is correct about the spitting?
Not too sure what the spitting and racism have in common. But Moscon is obviously an Italian kid with a big problem. A problem big enough that if Sky had known about before they signed Moscon, the signing would almost certainly never have happened , he is one big embarrassment. Time will tell but I would bet that Moscon's internal punishment from Sky will this time be much harsher than any from any ruling body.

It's a pity of all teams Moscon rides for it's Sky. That's the team I suspect the least to care about getting rid of such behaviour. Their PR department made the most pathetic attempt in an apologisy video I have ever seen, not even trying to be authentic.

Next to the fact on the same day Brailsford says it's French culture to spit on people. Good example for a rider who has been in a racial slur incident with Reza earlier. Besides Brailford's total lack of self criticism, it doesn't even make sense. Of all riders only Froome/Sky gets that treatment (I wonder why) and who says the perps were even French. It's not even the only French speaking nation in Europe.

Yes, that spitting is low, but it's not like it's randomly done. Btw, I suspect Moscon gets a ban of a month in December, just like Grivko got his ban months after his incident and in a race free period.

I don't see him go to Bahrain. That team actually seem to have a proper policy regarding transfers. UAE is probably the most logical option. That's the same old shitty team as when it was Lampre.

@LosBrolin: it also helped that the first 10 days of this Tour were relatively easy

If rider safety is really a priority than in mountain stages they need to put fences on the whole climb and every big climb. People seeing the race are welcome but stay behind the fence. Give the full road to the riders so they have also the space to attack (sometimes you see mountain stages where riders can't attack because it's too narrow due to all fans making a small corridor). A case like Nibali could only have happen if there were fences when he rode too close to the fence, in any other case it wouldn't have happened.

Is it a lot of work to put everywhere fences on a climb? Definitely.
Is it necessary to protect the riders? If this is a priority than yes.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Friday 20.Jul 14:06, 2018
If the Tour really want to do something about rider safety they should begin with doing something to the guy who clearly tried to push Froome off his bike. They have the TV footage, and you can clearly see the guy, so ID'ing him can't be too difficult. Exactly what they can do to him is another issue. But until someone is made an example of, it will continue.

Kristoff's diesel engine will only get better as the race progresses. But today I think Degenkolb and Colbrelli are still faster than him. I know you, as Norwegians, are hoping he will win but I think today it will be very hard. Also in pure sprint like Champs-Elysèes Demare is faster.

Agree with boris about Dumoulin being the key for Geraint's possible success here. When Froome goes, Dumoulin needs to chase him back and he'll probably drag Thomas with him. Without crashes I would say it's a big ask for Froome to even beat Thomas, latter needs to crack completely and you would think that in this point Froome(+Dumoulin) would be the more drained guy here having ridden Giro. I know there was an extra week between Giro and the Tour but few years ago these double attempts were thought to be "way too hard" and now it seems like a no biggie for the duo mentioned. Allez Geraint!

The break needs to get back before it can be a sprint. FDJ, Bora, UAE, Bahrain and Trek got the best sprinters left in the race, and not sure that is enough if Quick Step decides they want the break to succeed.

Kristoff wins champs-Elysèes this year by the way .... so for those who wanna put their money on that before his odds drops :D
ALOT of fast guys drops off the race, and suddenly Kristoff can picture his best tour ever . ... I think many things speaks for him to pick up 3 stages ...
He gets better and better compeared to his opponents the longer out in a GT
Sagan ( of course against his nature ) will eventually get to a defending point after doing alot of effort for intermediate sprints during the alps, and have this HUGE point gap on the green jersey .... maybe that take the edge of his sprints ....
Demarè hasn't been a 100% this tour ... of course, he is very hungry for a stage win, and will most likely be even more dangerous than Sagan ....
All other guys left, Kristoff SHOULD outsprint...
Lack of a strong train speaks against Kristoff though ... but Ferrari is still in the game, and seems pretty shaped... besides UAE still counts 8 guys, and they should take advantage of that ... especially now that Martin is out of the podium discussion....

So ... let's see what REAL jinxing is all about :D:D

Koronin [Koronin] Friday 20.Jul 02:08, 2018
Goon, I think Valverde went because he's at best in race shape, thus his climbing is suffering a bit. Add that to his not having ridden a Grand Tour in well over a year, it's not helping. Somehow I think Sky actually listened to Valverde's comment about not being anywhere near a peak and at best only being in race shape and actually took his word about it.
I agree if Landa had gone, there would have been a reaction from Sky.

Koronin [Koronin] Friday 20.Jul 02:04, 2018

No didn't watch the stage. However, I'm impressed with Landa finishing 5th and still suffering greatly from his injuries. He said today his back was actually worse than yesterday AND that he was seriously considering climbing off the bike and going home. He decided instead to just put his head down and hope he could get through.
As for yesterday, he said he never could have gone on the attack and that Valverde knew he couldn't do anything at all in that stage.
Just hope Landa can recover for next week.
As for why Valverde attacked yesterday, who knows, other than apparently he said something about someone had to try something. At least Dumoulin tried to take advantage of it.

The Alpe d'Huez, a breeding ground full drunken, selfish and narcistic idiots only thinking about their own person being there at that mountain. No other place in any cycling race is that ruined by such people than the Alpe d'Huez in the Tour.

And when are the Dutch people going to quit claiming that mountain as being Dutch. The mountain lies in France, the country with the most stage victories there in the Tour is Italy and most recently it's dominated by the French themselves with 3 winners pre Thomas. Last Dutch victory is from almost 30 years ago. Anyone under 35 has never seen a Dutch victory there in the Tour other than via footage on Youtube or from the archives of the NOS.

The only Dutch mountain is Mount Scenery on Saba.

If Nibali can recover he looks like the biggest favourite for Vuelta. Only Porte can really challenge him if Australian decides to ride and can save himself from crashes 3 weeks. Chaves and Landa are so weak in TT that they will lose 1:30 to Nibali on TT and Yates and Lopez can't maintain best climbing legs for 3 weeks.

This Nibali news just about writes this race off from a fantasy perspective for me. A little bad luck, and a lot of bad picks.
Had Nibali got a fair crack at today's stage he must of come close to winning it. Instead he finishes bravely in the top ten. Another case of a pro cyclist riding on adrenaline, and a super high pain threshold. Should be used to it by now, but no it continues to amaze me, and impress me in equal amounts.
Nibali always peaks in the third week of a GT. He was looking virtually guaranteed a podium. and with some good luck rather than bad who knows. #robbed by a moron

Can't say I am surprised, and expect it was Froome the spectator tried to trap, but failed and got the Nibali instead who crashed into the moto who had to stop because of the stupid spectator. Just me or was it fewer spectators today than usually on Huez? And the only way to solve this is to have barrier the whole climb, Nibali was down just before the barrier started, very sad. He looked strong today and would probably be even stronger next week. Think this also is his first DNF in a GT because of crash, he only has the Vuelta DSQ earlier.

Dumoulin could be very well key to Thomas' victory. But I think only stages 17 and 20 remain as big stages. If Dumoulin defends himself on stage 17 Sky won't order Thomas to suprisingly break with Dumoulin just 10-20 seconds behind Froome. With all his all-mighty inhalers Froome still can't be sure he can defend himself to Tom on TT.

Sir DB on the radio: "Froomey, what are you doing? G is suffering."

The two most unbelievable transformations in cycling history?
* Froome's 2nd place in the Vuelta 2011. He was an absolute donkey prior to it and has been world class ever since.
* Wiggins' 4th place at the 2009 Tour de France. Wow, just wow. He was finishing outside the top 100 in absolutely everything except TTs and cobbled race and had no GC results whatsoever.

Another point in favour of shorter stages, the sprinters have to ride full gas to avoid the time cut. It should be a concrete threat for the riders in the though stages.
In other news Sagan is sealing the green jersey with the usual uncontested intermediate sprint in mountain stages, if he keeps 100+ points advantage after Valence is pretty much mathematic.
White jersey fight is disappointing and appears to be between Martin and Latour (with a very small chance for Bernal if he recovers).

Vuillermoz confirmed out - apart from his two roleurs Bardet is left with half-injured Gallopin and Frank who was parachuted in at the last minute. Ie. all serious mountain work left to Latour, I predict a finish outside the top 5 but saving grace with a stage win.

Koronin [Koronin] Monday 16.Jul 23:55, 2018
The difference this year is that Alejandro's faux attacks might actually set up a real attack from Landa who is actually willing to attack form a distance instead of Quintana who doesn't seem to remember what an attack actually is. One other small note. Landa said way back during the winter that the way to destroy the Sky train is change of temp riding. Sky trains for tempo and he said many of their riders can't handle change of pace.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Monday 16.Jul 23:14, 2018
Given the dusty circumstances and how crash-marred it was throughout, I’m not surprised stage 9 turned into a stage where the onus was on not losing time rather than gaining it for the GC-contenders. What the next handful of stages will show is whether Movistar have learned from their mistakes and look to put pressure on Sky from the first mountain stage.

If this is another year of Alejandro faux-attacks for Nairo not commiting until the last summit finish whilst Poels powers 600 watts ahead of Froome on the other stages, I’m starting First Jai Alai instead.

What happened to Richie Porte is exactly the reason I never thought about picking him. That guy simply can't steer that bad luck is a misplaced term by now. High risk on crashing out of the Tour, that I even picked him a 15 man team (restriction free) for a game guessing who DNF the Tour. So little faith I have had in the Aussie.

Plus he hardly compensates with stage points. Not an avid sprinter and for the puncheur stages they have Van
Avermaet. Many mountain points go to attackers or better climbers and the TTT doesn't count.

Guess it's time to take all sprinters but Sagan off the team for next week. Just not sure about keeping Alaphilippe or not.

Koronin [Koronin] Sunday 15.Jul 18:42, 2018
Landa said his injuries are all superficial and is glad he's got a rest day to recover.

Maybe Valverde should actually race Paris-Roubiax AND Flanders next year. He and Froome appeared to be the only two GC riders who had any thoughts of trying to attack near the end.

Impressed by Movistar being able to limit the losses of Landa after his crash. Amazing they were able to get him back to a 7 second time loss with Erviti and Amador, while Uran had major times losses with Phinney and their cobbled rider trying to bring him back.

Francisco [K92-Team Neverland] Sunday 15.Jul 18:05, 2018
Good point about Daniel, Aragonite, and, yes, Porte in many teams. The aussie is almost a case study, so many are "happenings"...
I can add Martin to John and Romain in my day winners.. :)

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Sunday 15.Jul 17:56, 2018
Francisco almost all of us would of had Porte in our teams. For me rider of the day was Dan Martin. I thought he was dead and buried after yesterday crash, then he only goes on the attack today in the final 5k, on a cobbled stage. The pain threshold of these guys continues to amaze me. #keep taking the tramadol :)

'twas at least nice from a FC manager tactic perspective. The same old boring 7 GC + 2 sprinters recipe that works in the Giro and Vuelta was never an option for me here. Instead, 4 GC + 5 sprinters. Would have worked a lot better without today's headbutters though :(

Already more eventful than the full 2012 Tour. And can't say much happen before stage 8 to Aix-3 in 2013 either except of a TTT and a crazy end of stage 1 then.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Saturday 14.Jul 21:36, 2018
Apart from some slight time losses due to late crashes, proper split peloton from echelons which was brought back, is it fair to say this has been the most uneventful first 8 stages of a Tour in quite a while?

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Saturday 14.Jul 21:13, 2018
At last a stage to really look forward too. Not that it throws any more light on the potential GC contenders. I have a bunch of sprinters who need to be subbed out. Without any high mountain summit finish so far it makes it all a bit of a lottery who to bring in.

Koronin [Koronin] Saturday 14.Jul 19:21, 2018
I've seen a few people say to go back farther and Greipel headbutted Arnt and that was what he was regulated for, not the incident with Gaviria or drifting over where Groenewegen was.

I looked at it again . .. and I agree ... Greipel drifted a bit, but not in any unnatural way ... so it can't be that . .. but in the head bumping sequence, they bumped a little back and fourth, even if Gaviria was the worst one by far ...

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Saturday 14.Jul 17:34, 2018

if greipel drifted too much there then you have to disqualify someone in EVERY sprint. it wasnt unusual by any means. gaviria tried to squeeze into a gap that wasnt there.

look at the sprint that disqualified sagan last year, on youtube. we know that sagan didnt do anything wrong, but look at demare in the same sprint. he drifted across _the entire road_ and almost clipped bouhanni, still the jury did nothing about it. maybe it helps to be french in france

LosBrolin, actually it's somewhat unlikely as he's only managed 4 stage wins at the Tour in his career. It's a race that he spent years chasing and has probably had the least luck with. His crying when he got that podium back in 2015 is very telling on how much that meant to him.

231 km stages don't belong in a GT anymore anyway, regardless of the profile. The only minor reason it's acceptable forr being flat is the fact it's easier for the rider than tne classic type of stages of the same length the Giro tends to have.

A train no, a bit of help to ensure he was somewhere near the front of the group yes. 2 of those Movistar riders were Landa and Quintana who weren't going to do anything except hope they could stay with the group at the end because this type of climb is a type both have lost time on in the past.
No Martin wasn't better, he gambled and it paid off. Valverde started his sprint in around 20th place to end up 3rd. Today also showed that this team is not even close to as strong as they were 2 years ago with all the good domestiques they've lost over the last two years.

LosBrolin [JuhaMieto] Friday 13.Jul 05:21, 2018

did you expect them to line up a sprint train with 1km to go? There were at least 4 Movistar when it was 1.5km to go and not a single team except SKY had more members at the front. They did nothing wrong, Dan Martin was just better than Valverde.

Koronin [Koronin] Friday 13.Jul 04:12, 2018
Assassin, actually the rest of the team was nowhere to be found when they hit the bottom of the climb. Landa and Quintana were on their own as well. The problem was the rest of his team apparently still haven't learned how to pay attention because he was the only one who wasn't caught out in the crosswinds. If you read between the lines of what he said today he wasn't fully happy with how his team responded to today.

Assassin [Troy The Trader] Thursday 12.Jul 22:59, 2018

Koronin [Koronin] Thursday 12.Jul 22:51, 2018
I'm fairly sure you're referring to Valverde whom has well over 100 wins on his palmares now. Relying on that sprint of his works very well as those attacks many times don't pay off. Plus as I said, today he was way out of position again because he team was nowhere to be found.

EBH had a great first couple of years with MTN/DD. That coincided with Brian Smith being DS. Smith seems to be a great man manager and confidence giver to his riders( also did a great job at getting great results from Steve Cummings ) especially those that have gone a bit stale. That being the case its possible EBH could be better off going to a smaller team where he would get special treatment, be top dog, maybe get an early win then build from there. At QS he would be fairly anonymous and just be another wolf in the pack, not an alpha male though. #BigFishinaLittlePond

How many of those 19 are in GC discussion after the first week? Not all of them, that's why there is some value in Caruso bet in my opinion. Some of them are going to crack in the second and third week as well.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 21:59, 2018
Your saying that but you only have to look at the GC over the past few years to see there is invariably one or two unexpected names in there. The other reason I like to punt on the top 10 GC is that you almost always get some interest to the end of the race. Always a lot of DNF's, and then there is the occasional breakaway which wins by ten minutes plus and someone flies up the leaderboard in the third week.

He can do that. What he did in Dauphine was his best climbing for many years. But it's all about if he aim for good overall or stages. Not confident he will do well on cobbles also, but that was good odds in my opinion.

Anthony Turgis only good a few days in a year. He already had 2 good days this year so can he can do it again? I doubt. Navarro is the best chance for Cofidis to win a stage if can keep the pace 100 meter longer than in Dauphine.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 21:11, 2018
Saw the 8/11 Froome not to win a stage , which is 72%ish. Could see Vichot getting a stage win. Another French guy I could see going well is Anthony Turgis. After a very promising 2016 season, was a disappointment last year, and wouldn't be surprised if this was his breakthrough season. Also in form now as proven in the French National RR.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Wednesday 4.Jul 20:21, 2018
Imagine being offered a non-Kuba-GC-win-bet, Aragonite :D

I got in on Froome not to win GC at 50% return, can't find that bet available now. Not to win a stage at 72% return, not to podium at 137% return.

Most tempting stage wins-bet there currently is Majka at 300% return, Keukeleire at 900% and Vichot at 550% looking like decent 1e-flutters.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 19:55, 2018
Bernal will be sheltered to an extent. But if he were to be last Sky domestique standing Froome would think nothing of using him up and spitting him out if necessary.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 19:49, 2018

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 19:44, 2018
I noticed you said you backed Mareczko not to win a stage at the Giro. Is the Froome bet similar? Or is it not to win GC?

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Wednesday 4.Jul 19:31, 2018
Every year I deposit 30e before Het Volk and see how long they last, would’ve liked to have some money for stage win-bets on breakaway riders - but Froome not winning and Nibbles to beat G at too good odds not to punt at.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 19:18, 2018
Bernal and Latour are rightly first and second favourites. But I still find the 7/1 Martin, and 14/1 Benoot tempting. Perhaps I half my stake and go with both.:)

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Wednesday 4.Jul 19:12, 2018
If I hadn’t put all my 10e on Nibali to beat G in the GC at a 61%-return, I’d have a go at Latour. He’ll ride to limit his losses after having to drop off Bardet’s group on climbs. The white jersey also much bigger priority than for Sky/Movistar

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 19:00, 2018
Would probably be a big deal for Wanty to get a top twenty in the Tour too. Martin finished 23rd last year in GC

Erythropoietin [Erythropoietin] Wednesday 4.Jul 18:58, 2018
5th Winter Fantasy Overall
* Soler 4th seeded at Movistar.
* Bernal 3rd in the pecking order at Sky, likely another Sky donkey. But he should last long into each mountain stage and could win it even as a domestique.
* Latour 2nd behind Bardet. But if Bardet gets lost in the wind or on stage 9 he'll get some extra freedom, and he can also TT. Dani Martinez should be all behind Uran.
* Gaudu and G. Martin free to do whatever, stages or GC. Benoot as well, but probably more interested in a stage win.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 18:54, 2018
Yea no Pinot. Which would make Gaudu at 12/1 worth looking at. He did appear to be in abysmal form n the French RR though, whereas Martin looked real good. Benoot at 14/1 is the other one I'm considering.

We all know Landa rides for Team Mikel Landa, even British media agrees with that, they also says that Contador is racing, but that is just a small detail :P

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Wednesday 4.Jul 16:32, 2018
Landa does not get along with anybody. That is why he left Sky. Winning TdF is much more than "outclimbing" Froome (most of the GC's could probably do that). It requires beside good legs, also brilliant mind and loyal team. It's a pity, but Quintana and Landa have only legs. Valverde could be a gread leader, both mentally, and physical ..if the rest of the team supported him instead of desperately trying to show off on their own.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Wednesday 4.Jul 14:47, 2018
Sker - I agree, but hopefully we'll get echelons or action through other ways instead.

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Wednesday 4.Jul 13:54, 2018
Had my first good look at the final startlist. Seems we could have had a great race just for the young riders comp., had most of them not been domestiques for their team leaders. Very similar in fact to the main race, take away one rider from Sky, then there is a whole bunch who could challenge for the win. :)

johnjackjoe [JohnJackJoe Racing] Wednesday 4.Jul 08:17, 2018
Movistar did not give a single fuck about the Giro. They are all-in for the Tour and to win the Tour you need to outclimb Froome. Quintana and Landa have ~30 race days. That's just the right amount of race days you expect before the TdF if you don't race the Giro or are named Valverde.

Regarding team chemistry/drama I think Unzue is hoping that the captaincy gets a clear answer soon and that Landa or Quintana will fall in line. I can't see Valverde trying for GC at the Tour with the WC being this hilly. So Movistar brings all guns to the Tour in the hopes that one of them will be able to beat Froome.

And Soler was at P-R because he was always planned as a super domestique at the Tour and even a possible fourth prong GC threat that can TT. So in conclusion: I can't wait to see Movistar lose 10 minutes before the race starts to climb.

Koronin [Koronin] Wednesday 4.Jul 03:05, 2018
Marek_c, Movistar hasn't made sense at all. The entire line up for the Giro was a what in the world are they thinking. Why Soler was at Paris-Rubiax no one knows. Quintana has raced a grand total of 4 times since January and two of those races he was specifically sent as a domestique (Catalonia to ride for Valverde and Basque to ride for Landa). Landa has races only slightly more than Quintana as he did go to the Ardennes to race for Valverde there. Now they send all 3 to the Tour, with major rumors that Quintana and Landa do not get along at all (even though in the media they are being cordial to each other). Then they put together a team for the Tour that is loyal to Valverde, thus leading to the belief that they think a war could break out between Landa and Quintana and by ensuring the riders going are loyal to Valverde you ensure the rest of the team doesn't implode and doesn't take sides as they'll continue to take their ques from Valverde and remain neutral in the battle between the other and continue to do their jobs and not worry about what is going on with Landa and Quintana. If this happens and they become more interested in beating each other, it could still have an effect on the other teams as they could start attacking and not caring what the other teams are or aren't doing thus forcing them to chase just because they can't really let them go.

sker [Team Paracarri] Tuesday 3.Jul 20:26, 2018
Taking a closer look to the parcours can this be the most boring first 10 days of a GT ever?
A TTT (I would watch only beacuse is relevant to GC, but let's face it they are boring), Mur de Bretagne (10 min worth watching) and the cobblestone stage. All the rest are pretty much easy spint stages unless the peloton mess up badly

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Tuesday 3.Jul 08:22, 2018
Well, why strugle the whole peloton 3 weeks of Gran Tour if they just could ask Mr. Froome who he thinks will win, then "review carefully his explanations" and set up the final standings. (no CPKS needed) Quick, safe, cheap, fair :)

Koronin - it was me asking for a Movistar strategy :). I think it has been a mystery not only current season, but the last couple of years actually. They are wasting talents

Koronin [Koronin] Tuesday 3.Jul 02:17, 2018
To whoever asked about what is Movistar thinking, well that's a wonderful question and no one has been able to figure that out this entire season. So there you go.

Now for the decision by WADA/UCI. We have learned today that anti doping is a total farce and the peloton is as dirty if not dirtier than it's ever been oh and that both WADA and the UCI can be bought for the right about of money (although I think Russia more or less told us that about WADA during the last Olympics).

Also is there actually any reason to even bother with the Tour this year since we already know the outcome and know that Froome can do anything he wants without any repercussions?

Brilliant, no need to even to do the excretion test!

sinal [sinal cycling team] Monday 2.Jul 16:00, 2018
Wada comments:

"Based on a number of factors that are specific to the case of Mr. Froome -- including, in particular, a significant increase in dose, over a short period prior to the doping control, in connection with a documented illness; as well as, demonstrated within-subject variability in the excretion of Salbutamol -- WADA concluded that the sample result was not inconsistent with the ingestion of inhaled Salbutamol within the permitted maximum dose.
WADA recognizes that, in rare cases, athletes may exceed the decision limit concentration (of 1200 ng of Salbutamol per ml of urine) without exceeding the maximum inhaled dose. This is precisely why the Prohibited List allows for athletes that exceed the decision limit to demonstrate, typically through a controlled pharmacokinetic study (CPKS) as permitted by the Prohibited List, that the relevant concentration is compatible with a permissible, inhaled dose.
In Mr. Froome’s case, WADA accepts that a CPKS would not have been practicable as it would not have been possible to adequately recreate the unique circumstances that preceded the 7 September doping control (e.g. illness, use of medication, chronic use of Salbutamol at varying doses over the course of weeks of high intensity competition).
Therefore, having carefully reviewed Mr. Froome’s explanations and taking into account the unique circumstances of his case, WADA accepts that:

the sample result is not inconsistent with an ingestion of Salbutamol within the permitted maximum inhaled dose;
an adequate CPKS is not practicable; and
the sample may be considered not to be an AAF."

PERFECT hahahahaha

Does anybody understand what Movistar is up to this time? :) As always - strongest team on paper with totaly fucked strategy. They have 3 potential leaders - they choose the two with lowest IQ and biggest attitude problems to lead the Tour, and the only one "true leader" will be a "joker" (read: will run totaly on his own, or wait until the others fail to get his chance). :))

I'm gonna guess he gets cleared to ride on Wednesday. But it won't be a pretty three weeks for Froome. A couple years ago the French spectators threw urine at him and shouted "dopé". What can he expect this year after what ASO, Hinault and others have stirred up? It only takes one nutcase to ruin the race for him.

Koronin [Koronin] Monday 2.Jul 02:41, 2018
Yes the ASO has opened a can of worms with this, however I don't think it's unexpected. They've just started also with it needs a decision before la Vuelta because they don't want to start this year's Vuelta without knowing the real winning of last year's. So it may be kind of a double edged reason for this by the ASO. However this is on the UCI for how long it's taking and on Sky for doing all they can to drag it out for as long as possible. On the other hand, we still have Jamie Roson whom had an issue with his Bio Passport in Jan of 2017 and was just provisionally suspended and doesn't have a definite decision on that yet either.

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Monday 2.Jul 00:23, 2018

Assassin [Troy The Trader] Sunday 1.Jul 14:10, 2018

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Sunday 1.Jul 14:02, 2018
The banter when Geraint Thomas is leading by 15 minutes on stage 20 but crashes out through nobodys fault but his own and is unable to continue would be epic though.

But yeah - regardless of what happens here, this is one where it's fair to that that cycling is the big loser with Froome's status still not clarified.

Assassin [Troy The Trader] Sunday 1.Jul 14:01, 2018
They are allowed to but well seems stupid to me that they given that power. UCI has to have casting vote on it realistically.

"In the Tour's rules, one article states that the organisation reserves the right to refuse any rider where there is a risk to the integrity and reputation of the race."

Seems the ASO are allowed to deny him. Madiot and Hinault are happy. Movistar as well, I assume.
It's ridiculous either way.

Assassin [Troy The Trader] Sunday 1.Jul 13:36, 2018
He should start. UCI should be the ones deciding on whether he races not the ASO

Partykjeppen [Il Piccolo Gregari] Sunday 1.Jul 13:27, 2018
So the can of worms has been properly opened by ASO in trying to block Chris Froome to enter the race.

I have to say I'm in two minds about this.

On the one hand the process for a test over the limit for a specified substance is one where he's not suspended as he's not quite guilty until proven not innocent. Unlike a positive test for doping where he'd been guilty until proven otherwise, thus suspended. In principle, ASO should honor that due process.

On the other hand this has dragged on for way too long. This process clearly isn't working as it hasn't been resolved almost 10 months after the test in question and he already has one GT to his name hingeing on the outcome of the legal process. A legal process which Team Sky seem to be dragging out and stalling to make it harder for UCI/WADA/whoever to suspend Froome in, given the ever higher stakes. Retroactively taking away the Giro and Tour from him would make this sport look an even big farce to the casual fan than the Lance-business.

I hope ASO succeed in barring him from starting, if nothing else just to avoid the focus being on the will he/won't he be suspended. Also, the crocodile tears from Dave B plus subsequent litigation fest should be good fun too!

I agree that they won't be on the podium for the TTT, but LLS, Valgren, Fuglsang plus engines of Cort, Gruzdev and Kangert ain't half bad.

No reason to change the dynamics of the game because of UCI regulations in my opinion. We also have 9 riders in U23 races where it only is 6 riders teams

Aragonite [TORA TORA TORA] Friday 8.Jun 21:49, 2018
Presumably the game format of nine men teams was originally based on the number of riders per team in the GT's. Now that the UCI has decided to reduce the GT teams to eight, is there any plans/thoughts on the game format following suit?
Could add an interesting new dynamic to the manager game.

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Friday 8.Jun 12:32, 2018
Regarding the Giro-Tour combo, I think Froome has a big chance to succee this year, not only because of the extra week, but.. because the route of this years Giro was unusual "easy" compared to previous editions, and the fatigue is probably not that big. (quote Froome himself before Giro: "Stage 19 will be the first mountain stage".)

Regarding the Movistar, they always have one of the strongest squads in the field (on paper), but somehow always spoil their chances, in my opinion, mostly because of lack of inteligence. They have more strong riders than even necessary, but their strategical thinking is a pure disaster. Valverde is an exception, but he will probably be working humbly for Quintana.

Some new, interesting dynamics for the Tour this year.
- Froome and Dumoulin doing the Giro-Tour double which usually doesn't go well, but this year there's one extra week inbetween. The 66.5 km of TTing are in favor of them. And this year's course isn't very mountainous, giving them some easy days. Can they last the full 3 weeks without feeling the extra fatigue?
- Lots will still happen before the first rest day. Someone will lose minutes to the wind on stage 1 already, and the cobbles of stage 9 will cause just as much drama. Can Roglic get his positioning and bike handling right? Can Porte do 3 weeks without crashing?
- Sky and Movistar are super strong with many GC contenders each, the other teams only have one candidate each. Remains to be seen whether the big two will ride as teams. What if Froome has lost 2-3 minutes to Bernal and G after the first week, and maybe the Movistars will be within seconds of eachother.

Marek_c [Passionforbiking] Wednesday 6.Jun 09:30, 2018
Every article refers to F1. It appears like there will be no time intervals between groups. Cyclingnews states: "It is uncertain how much space will be between the groups when the organiser lines them on the starting road."

In Formula one, there is a grid but still everybody starts together. It helps only because the margins are really smal (like tenth of a second) and overtaking is really difficult. In order to make it work in cycling - the grid needs to be stretched across multiple kilometers, otherways it will be packed bunch in just a couple seconds after start.

johnjackjoe [JohnJackJoe Racing] Monday 4.Jun 15:58, 2018
Not really messy. Just signing in early won't put you in the first row at the start of the race. It's to prevent a GC rider signing in late and having to fight through 150 riders til he's at the front of the peloton, because there won't be a neutral zone.

It's just about time for a black swan to upend the apple cart, like in 2014. Cobbles and ultra short stages is at least token gestures in that direction plus slightly harder to keep everything under wraps with eight-man teams.

The issue the past few Tours have been Skybots setting such a hellish pace at the front that they silently whip all other contenders silently into submission. Why try to attack when Poels, Thomas, Landa is setting the pace so high that you'll pop within three minutes? I still can't see who'll be brave and strong enough to give it a proper go unless similar incidents which caused Froome to withdraw in 2014 occur.

Koronin [Koronin] Wednesday 18.Oct 23:31, 2017
Hey finally an English language media source that got the translation correct. Amazing. Yes Valverde has said a couple of times he does not want to race the Tour next summer and doesn't think he should have to go it. Valverde will be leader for the Vuelta. Landa has apparently made some comments about preferring the Giro/Vuelta double this year. I'd be a surprised if Movistar lets them both have that double.
